Real Numbers Symbol (ℝ) and Blackboard Bold: Meaning and How to Type It

The symbol for all real numbers is ℝ, a capital R written in "blackboard bold" with a doubled vertical stroke. It denotes every number on the number line, and you can type it with 211D then Alt + X in Word, ℝ in HTML, or \mathbb{R} in LaTeX.

This guide explains what ℝ contains, how it relates to ℕ, ℤ, ℚ, ℂ, and ℍ, how to read notation like x ∈ ℝ and ℝ², and how to type every blackboard bold letter, including the \mathbb{1} problem in LaTeX.

Copy and Paste the Real Numbers Symbol

  • ℝ — real numbers (U+211D)
  • ℕ — natural numbers (U+2115)
  • ℤ — integers (U+2124)
  • ℚ — rational numbers (U+211A)
  • ℂ — complex numbers (U+2102)
  • ℍ — quaternions (U+210D)
  • 𝔽 — a field, often finite (U+1D53D)
  • ∀x ∈ ℝ — "for all x in the real numbers"

The Real Numbers Symbol Explained

Blackboard bold began as a classroom workaround: textbooks set the number sets in boldface (R), but bold is impossible to write with chalk, so lecturers doubled the vertical strokes instead. Typesetters later copied the chalk version into print; the style is also called double-struck or open face.

Each letter abbreviates a word:

The real numbers are every point on an unbroken number line: all the rationals plus irrationals such as √2, π, and e, whose decimals never terminate or repeat. Formally, ℝ is the unique complete ordered field; "complete" means there are no gaps in the line.

The Nesting of the Number Sets

The sets form a chain, each strictly larger than the last:

ℕ ⊂ ℤ ⊂ ℚ ⊂ ℝ ⊂ ℂ ⊂ ℍ

  • Every natural number is an integer, but −1 ∈ ℤ is not in ℕ.
  • Every integer is rational (5 = 5/1), but 1/2 is not an integer.
  • Every rational is real, but √2 is not rational.
  • Every real is complex (3 = 3 + 0i), but i is not real.

ℕ, ℤ, and ℚ are all countable (they can be listed in an infinite sequence, so each has cardinality ℵ₀), while ℝ is uncountable: Cantor's diagonal argument shows that no list can contain every real number.

Whether 0 belongs to ℕ depends on the author: ISO 80000-2 and most computer scientists include it, while many number-theory texts start at 1 and write ℕ₀ when zero is wanted. State your convention once.

Notation Built on ℝ

Membership and Quantifiers

  • x ∈ ℝ — x is real
  • ∀x ∈ ℝ, x² ≥ 0 — for all real x, x squared is non-negative
  • ∃x ∈ ℝ such that x² = 2 — there exists a real number whose square is 2
  • f: ℝ → ℝ — f maps reals to reals

ℝ⁺ or ℝ_{>0}

positive real numbers

ℝ_{≥0}

ℝ \ ℚ

Intervals

An interval is a connected piece of ℝ. Square brackets include the endpoint and round brackets exclude it: [0, 1] contains 0 and 1, (0, 1) contains neither, and the whole line is (−∞, ∞) = ℝ.

ℝ², ℝ³, and ℝⁿ

Exponents on ℝ denote Cartesian products. ℝ² is the set of ordered pairs (x, y) of real numbers, the coordinate plane; ℝ³ is three-dimensional space; and ℝⁿ is n-dimensional space. A function f: ℝ² → ℝ takes a point in the plane and returns one number, such as f(x, y) = x² + y².

Windows: None of these letters has a DOS-era Alt code, so the reliable route in Word is to type the hex code (for example 211D) and press Alt + X; Word also accepts the decimal forms Alt + 8477 (ℝ), 8469 (ℕ), 8484 (ℤ), 8474 (ℚ), and 8450 (ℂ). In other programs, search "double-struck" in the Character Map. In Word's equation editor, \doubleR converts to ℝ.

Mac: There is no shortcut; open the Character Viewer with Control + Command + Space, search "double-struck," and double-click the letter.

iPhone and Android: Copy the symbol from the block above, or create a text replacement so that "RR" expands to ℝ.

HTML: The named entities are ℝ, ℕ, ℤ, ℚ, ℂ, and ℍ (ℍ); 𝔽 is 𝔽 or 𝔽.

Blackboard Bold in LaTeX

The \mathbb command comes from amsfonts, which amssymb loads automatically, so either \usepackage{amssymb} or \usepackage{amsfonts} provides it. Use it in math mode only. Most authors define preamble shortcuts so that \R means \mathbb{R}:

```latex
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{amssymb} % provides \mathbb (via amsfonts)
\usepackage{bbm} % provides \mathbbm for digits and lowercase
\usepackage{dsfont} % provides \mathds, an alternative for \mathds{1}
\newcommand{\R}{\mathbb{R}}
\newcommand{\Z}{\mathbb{Z}}
\begin{document}
\[ \mathbb{N} \subset \Z \subset \mathbb{Q} \subset \R \subset \mathbb{C} \subset \mathbb{H} \]
\[ \forall x \in \R,\; x^2 \geq 0, \qquad f\colon \R^2 \to \R, \qquad \mathbb{F}_q^n \]
\[ \R_{>0}, \qquad \R \setminus \mathbb{Q}, \qquad [0, \infty) = \R_{\geq 0} \]
\[ \mathbbm{1}_A(x), \qquad \mathds{1}_A(x), \qquad \mathbbm{k} \]
\end{document}
```

Three things catch people out:

  • \mathbb only works on uppercase letters. The amsfonts blackboard font contains A–Z only, so \mathbb{1} and \mathbb{k} print garbage or nothing. For the indicator function 𝟙 or a lowercase field 𝕜, load bbm and write \mathbbm{1} or \mathbbm{k}; if your installation lacks the bbm fonts, dsfont's \mathds{1} is a drop-in alternative.
  • Bold is not blackboard bold. \mathbf{R} gives an upright bold R, which some journals and older books use for the reals and which is also the vector convention. Pick one style; \mathbb{R} is the modern default.
  • Unicode letters need font support. A pasted ℝ fails under pdfLaTeX; with XeLaTeX or LuaLaTeX and unicode-math you can type ℝ directly or use \symbb{R}.

What Does ℝ Mean in Math?

ℝ is the set of all real numbers: every rational and irrational number, or equivalently every point on the number line. Writing x ∈ ℝ says x is real, with no restriction on sign or size.

What Is the Difference Between ℝ and ℝ²?

ℝ is a line and ℝ² is a plane. An element of ℝ is a single number like 3.7; an element of ℝ² is an ordered pair like (3.7, −1). ℝⁿ generalizes this to lists of n reals.

Why Does \mathbb{1} Not Work in LaTeX?

The amsfonts blackboard bold font only contains capital letters. For the indicator function 𝟙, load bbm and use \mathbbm{1}, or load dsfont and use \mathds{1}.

Writing Set Notation Cleanly

Papers in analysis and algebra are dense with ℝ, ℤ, and ℂ, and the difference between \mathbb{R} and \mathbf{R} shows immediately in the PDF. Octree, the AI LaTeX editor at useoctree.com, sets up the right packages and macros for you and renders set notation as you write. Every number set, membership, and quantifier symbol with its LaTeX command is at https://tools.useoctree.com/symbols/set-theory.
