Eta Symbol (Η η): Meaning, Uses, and How to Type It

Eta is the seventh letter of the Greek alphabet. The lowercase η is the standard symbol for efficiency in physics and engineering, for viscosity in fluid mechanics, and for the learning rate in machine learning, and it names the Dirichlet eta function and the Minkowski metric tensor η_μν. The uppercase Η looks exactly like the Latin H and is almost never used as a symbol. To type eta, use \eta in LaTeX, the HTML entity η, or the H key on a Greek keyboard layout.

This guide covers what each form of eta means, where it appears in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, machine learning, math, and particle physics, and how to type η and Η on Mac, Windows, iPhone, in HTML, and in LaTeX.

The Eta Symbol Explained

Eta has two shapes, both of which you can copy from here:

 • Η — uppercase eta (Unicode U+0397)
 • η — lowercase eta (Unicode U+03B7)

There is no variant glyph, so LaTeX has no \vareta. The name is pronounced "AY-tuh" in English and "EE-ta" in modern Greek. In the Greek numeral system eta stood for 8. The letter started life as the Phoenician heth, a consonant like h, which is why it has the shape of an H and sits on the H key of Greek keyboards; in classical Greek it became a long "e" vowel. Lowercase η looks like an n with a descender on the right, and in handwriting it is easy to confuse with n, so write the tail clearly.

Uppercase Eta (Η)

Because uppercase eta is visually identical to the Latin capital H, it has essentially no use as a mathematical symbol; writing Η for a variable would simply be read as H. You will meet the capital letter in Greek words and in the names of fraternities and honor societies such as Eta Kappa Nu, the electrical-engineering honor society, and Eta Sigma Phi for classics.

LaTeX reflects this: there is no \Eta command. If you need an upright capital eta in an equation, type \mathrm{H}.

Lowercase Eta (η)

Uses of lowercase η:

 • Efficiency — η = useful output / input, in thermodynamics and engineering
 • Dynamic viscosity — η (or μ) in fluid mechanics and polymer science
 • Learning rate — η in gradient descent
 • Dirichlet eta function — η(s), the alternating zeta function
 • Minkowski metric — η_μν in special relativity
 • Pseudorapidity — η in collider physics
 • Eta meson — η and η′ in particle physics
 • Effect size — η² (eta squared) in ANOVA
 • Intrinsic impedance — η₀ ≈ 377 Ω of free space

Efficiency in Thermodynamics and Engineering

Efficiency is the ratio of useful output to total input, and it is written η in almost every engineering discipline. For a heat engine that takes in heat Q_H and does work W:

η = W / Q_H = 1 − Q_C / Q_H

where Q_C is the heat rejected to the cold reservoir. Sadi Carnot showed in 1824 that no engine working between two temperatures can beat the Carnot efficiency:

η_Carnot = 1 − T_C / T_H

with temperatures in kelvin. A power plant running between 800 K and 300 K cannot exceed η = 1 − 300/800 = 62.5%, and real plants reach 35–45%. The same letter describes electric motors (η = P_mechanical / P_electrical), solar cells (η ≈ 20% for commercial silicon), pumps, turbines, and antennas. Efficiency is dimensionless and usually quoted as a percentage.

Viscosity in Fluid Mechanics

Dynamic viscosity measures a fluid's resistance to shear. Physicists and chemists often write it η (engineers more often use μ), and Newton's law of viscosity reads:

τ = η du/dy

where τ is the shear stress and du/dy the velocity gradient. The SI unit is the pascal-second (Pa·s); water at 20 °C has η ≈ 1.0 mPa·s, honey a few Pa·s, and glass effectively infinite. Viscosity appears in Stokes' law for the drag on a small sphere moving slowly through a fluid:

F = 6π η r v

which is the basis of falling-ball viscometers and of Millikan's oil-drop experiment.

Learning Rate in Machine Learning

In machine learning η is the usual symbol for the learning rate, the step size of gradient descent. Each update moves the parameters θ a small distance downhill along the gradient of the loss function L:

θ ← θ − η ∇L(θ)

Too small an η and training crawls; too large and it overshoots or diverges. Typical values for neural networks range from 10⁻⁴ to 10⁻¹, and optimizers such as Adam adapt the effective rate per parameter. Learning-rate schedules such as step decay and cosine annealing change η over the course of training. Some authors write α instead, but η is the choice in most deep-learning textbooks.

The Dirichlet Eta Function

The Dirichlet eta function is the alternating version of the Riemann zeta function:

η(s) = Σ (−1)ⁿ⁻¹ / nˢ = 1 − 1/2ˢ + 1/3ˢ − 1/4ˢ + …

It converges for all s with real part greater than 0, unlike ζ(s), which needs Re(s) > 1. The two are related by η(s) = (1 − 2¹⁻ˢ) ζ(s), which gives a convenient way to extend ζ to the critical strip. At s = 1 the series is the alternating harmonic series, so η(1) = ln 2.

The Metric Tensor and Pseudorapidity

In special relativity the flat spacetime metric is written η_μν, a 4 × 4 diagonal matrix with entries (−1, 1, 1, 1) or, in the other common sign convention, (1, −1, −1, −1). The spacetime interval is ds² = η_μν dx^μ dx^ν, and general relativity replaces the constant η_μν with the curved metric g_μν.

In collider physics pseudorapidity η describes the angle of a particle relative to the beam axis:

η = −ln tan(θ/2)

A particle perpendicular to the beam has η = 0; one nearly along the beam has large |η|. Pseudorapidity is used instead of θ because differences in η are invariant under boosts along the beam, which is why detectors such as ATLAS and CMS describe their coverage as |η| < 2.5.

Windows: Eta has no classic Alt code, so Alt + 951 works only in Microsoft Word and other apps that accept Unicode Alt codes. In Word, the most reliable method is to type 03B7 and press Alt + X. Elsewhere, open Character Map, search for "eta," and copy the character, or use the emoji panel (Win + .) and its Symbols tab.

Mac: macOS has no Option-key shortcut for eta. Add the Greek keyboard in System Settings > Keyboard > Input Sources, switch to it, and press H for η or Shift + H for Η. Alternatively, open the Character Viewer with Control + Command + Space and search for "eta."

iPhone and iPad: Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard and choose Greek. Switch keyboards with the globe key; η sits on the H key. Android users can add Greek in Gboard's language settings.

Word and Google Docs: In Word, use Insert > Symbol > More Symbols with the subset set to Greek and Coptic. In Google Docs, use Insert > Special characters and search for "eta".

HTML: Write η for η and Η for Η. Eta squared is η2 or η².

LaTeX: In math mode, \eta gives η. There is no \Eta; for an upright capital use \mathrm{H}. The following document compiles as written:

1\documentclass{article}
2\usepackage{amsmath}
3\begin{document}
4Efficiency is $\eta$, the metric is $\eta_{\mu\nu}$, and the learning rate is $\eta$.
5\[
6 \eta_{\mathrm{Carnot}} = 1 - \frac{T_C}{T_H},
7 \qquad
8 \theta \leftarrow \theta - \eta \nabla L(\theta),
9 \qquad
10 \eta(s) = \sum_{n=1}^{\infty} \frac{(-1)^{n-1}}{n^s},
11 \qquad
12 \eta = -\ln \tan\frac{\theta}{2}
13\]
14\end{document}

For eta in running text, the textgreek package provides \texteta, which gives an upright η in the surrounding font.

Related Greek Letters

Efficiency η is built from temperatures and heat flows; viscosity η shares its job with μ; and the metric η_μν is indexed by μ and ν. In machine learning η steps the parameters θ, and in number theory η(s) is the alternating cousin of ζ(s).

FAQ

What does η mean in physics?

Most often η is efficiency, the ratio of useful work to energy input, or dynamic viscosity in fluid mechanics. In relativity it is the Minkowski metric η_μν, and in particle physics it is pseudorapidity or the η meson. The surrounding equation makes the meaning clear.

What does η mean in machine learning?

η is the learning rate, the step size in gradient descent: θ ← θ − η∇L(θ). It controls how far the parameters move on each update. Some textbooks use α for the same quantity.

Is η the same as the letter n?

No. η (eta, U+03B7) is a Greek letter with a descender on the right stroke, while n (U+006E) is a Latin letter. They are easy to confuse in handwriting but are completely different characters to a computer. In italic math fonts the tail of η is the giveaway.

How do you pronounce eta?

"AY-tuh" in English, "EE-ta" in modern Greek. The acronym ETA (estimated time of arrival) is unrelated to the Greek letter.

Writing with Greek Symbols

Papers that mix efficiencies, viscosities, and learning rates need eta typeset cleanly and consistently. In LaTeX that means \eta in math mode rather than a pasted Unicode character, which keeps spacing and italics correct throughout the document.
