The And Symbol (&, ∧): Ampersand Meaning, Logical And, and How to Type Them

The "and" symbol & is the ampersand: a single character that stands for the word and, used in company names such as AT&T, in titles, and in code. In logic and mathematics the word is written instead with the wedge ∧, read "and," so p ∧ q is true only when both p and q are true.

This guide covers where the ampersand came from, when it is acceptable to use in place of "and," how the logical ∧ differs from it, and how to type both on Windows, Mac, phones, HTML, and LaTeX.

  • & — ampersand (U+0026)
  • ∧ — logical and, the wedge (U+2227)
  • ⋀ — n-ary logical and, the big wedge (U+22C0)
  • ⁊ — Tironian et, the medieval "and" still used in Irish (U+204A)
  • ﹠ & — small and fullwidth ampersands for CJK typesetting (U+FE60, U+FF06)

The And Symbol Explained

The ampersand began as handwriting. Roman scribes joined the letters of et, the Latin for "and," into a single flourish, and the cursive E and t are still visible in italic ampersands of fonts such as Garamond and Caslon. The sign kept its place through medieval manuscripts and early printing, and until the nineteenth century it was recited at the end of the English alphabet. Because saying "X, Y, Z, and" was confusing, schoolchildren said "and per se and," meaning "and, by itself, and"; slurred together, that phrase became the word ampersand, first recorded in 1837.

The logical and ∧ is unrelated in origin. It is an inverted ∨ (the "or" sign, from Latin vel) and entered formal logic in Arend Heyting's 1930 axiomatization of intuitionistic logic. It is called the wedge, and in lattice theory it also denotes the meet, or greatest lower bound, of two elements.

Uses of the Ampersand

Names, Titles, and Brands

The ampersand belongs in proper names where the owner put it: AT&T, Procter & Gamble, Marks & Spencer, Johnson & Johnson, Dolce & Gabbana. Removing or adding one changes the registered name, so copy the form the company uses. It also appears in label-style pairs like "Q&A," "R&D," and "B&B." Note the spacing convention: a space on each side between full words (Marks & Spencer) and no spaces between initialisms (R&D).

Citations and Screen Credits

APA style uses the ampersand between author surnames inside parentheses and in the reference list: (Kahneman & Tversky, 1979). The Writers Guild of America uses it to encode collaboration: "written by Smith & Jones" means the two wrote as a team, whereas "written by Smith and Jones" means they worked separately on successive drafts.

Running Prose

In ordinary sentences, write the word. Style guides from the AP Stylebook to the Chicago Manual of Style restrict & to names, headlines where space is tight, tables, and the citation forms above. A sentence such as "we tested the method & found it faster" reads as a text message, not a report.

Programming and Markup

Code uses the ampersand constantly, and the meaning depends on how many you type:

  • && is the logical AND in C, C++, Java, JavaScript, PHP, Rust, and shells (make && make install runs the second command only if the first succeeds).
  • A single & is the bitwise AND in those languages (6 & 3 is 2), the address-of operator in C, a reference in C++ and Rust, and the background operator in Unix shells.
  • Python and SQL spell the logical operator as the word and/AND; PowerShell uses -and.
  • In URLs, & separates query parameters: ?page=2&sort=date.
  • In HTML and XML, & starts an entity, so a literal one must be written &; forgetting this is a common cause of validation errors and broken links.

Logical And in Mathematics

The wedge joins two propositions: (x > 0) ∧ (x < 10) describes the open interval from 0 to 10. Its truth table has a single true row, when both inputs are true. The big wedge ⋀ is the n-ary version, so ⋀ᵢ pᵢ means "every pᵢ holds." Boolean algebra and digital electronics write the same operation as a product, A · B or simply AB, with + for OR, and circuit diagrams draw it as the D-shaped AND gate. In set theory the corresponding operation is intersection, ∩, and in probability "A and B" becomes P(A ∩ B).

Windows: The ampersand is Shift + 7 on US and UK keyboards (Shift + 6 on French AZERTY, where it is also the unshifted 1 key). Alt + 38 is the ASCII code if a key is missing. For ∧, type 2227 in Word and press Alt + X, or use Insert > Symbol in the Mathematical Operators subset. The big wedge ⋀ is 22C0 Alt + X.

Mac: Shift + 7 gives &. There is no Option shortcut for the wedge; open the Character Viewer with Control + Command + Space and search "logical and."

iPhone and Android: Tap the 123 key to reach the symbol keyboard, where & has its own key; long-pressing it offers the section sign §. Neither iOS nor Gboard includes ∧, so copy it from the list above or add a text replacement.

Ampersand and Logical And in LaTeX

In LaTeX the bare ampersand is a reserved character: it is the column separator inside tabular, array, align, matrix, and every other alignment environment. Typing Procter & Gamble in ordinary text therefore stops compilation with the error Misplaced alignment tab character &. Escape it as \&, which works in both text and math mode. The same escape is needed in BibTeX fields and in \caption and \section arguments; only \url{}, \verb, and verbatim take a raw &.

1\documentclass{article}
2\usepackage{amsmath}
3\usepackage{amssymb}
4\begin{document}
5Text mode: Procter \& Gamble, AT\&T, and R\&D all need the backslash.
6
7Logic: $p \land q$, $p \wedge q$, $\neg(p \land q) \equiv \neg p \lor \neg q$,
8and $\bigwedge_{i=1}^{n} p_i$.
9
10\begin{tabular}{l c r}
11Item & Qty & Price \\
12Apples & 3 & \$1.20 \\
13Pears & 2 & \$0.95 \\
14\end{tabular}
15
16\begin{align}
17a &= b + c \\
18 &= d
19\end{align}
20
21Code: \verb|if (a && b)| or \texttt{a \&\& b}.
22\end{document}

\land and \wedge are the same symbol; \land reads better in logic and \wedge in differential forms, where it is the exterior product. \bigwedge scales to a large operator with limits like \sum. In align, place & immediately before the symbol you want lined up, usually the equals sign, and remember that the number of & per row must not exceed the column count declared in a tabular.

What Is the & Symbol Called?

It is the ampersand. The name is a corruption of "and per se and," the phrase schoolchildren used when reciting the alphabet with & as its final character; the glyph itself is a ligature of the Latin word et.

Is It Acceptable to Use & Instead of "And"?

Only in specific places: company and product names that use it officially, abbreviations such as R&D, parenthetical citations in APA style, tables and headlines where space is tight, and screenwriting credits. In the body of an essay, report, or email, write "and."

What Is the Logical And Symbol?

The wedge ∧ (U+2227). The statement p ∧ q is true only when both p and q are true. Electronics and Boolean algebra write the same operation as A · B or AB, programming languages as && or and, and set theory expresses "in both sets" with ∩.

Why Does LaTeX Complain About & in My Text?

Because & is the alignment tab that separates columns in tables and aligned equations, LaTeX refuses it outside those environments and reports "Misplaced alignment tab character &." Replace every ampersand in prose with \&; inside a tabular or align the bare & is exactly what you want.

Writing And Symbols Cleanly in Your Documents

Reach for \& whenever an ampersand belongs in text, \land when you mean logical conjunction, and a bare & only to separate columns. Octree, the AI LaTeX editor at useoctree.com, flags the misplaced-alignment-tab error as you type and offers the escaped form in one click, so a stray & in a company name never breaks your build.
